Over 20 Million Bots Trying To Buy A PS5 Were Blocked By Walmart On Nov. 25

Retail behemoth Walmart has revealed that it blocked over 20 million bots trying to purchase Sony‘s PS5 from the company during its November 25 event.

Speaking in an official blog post, Jerry Geisler, chief information security officer for Walmart, revealed that the company saw increased traffic from “grinch bots trying to steal would-be-presents” from regular consumers.

As such, Walmart has “built, deployed, and are continuously updating our own bot detection tools allowing us to successfully block the vast majority of bots we see.”

One bot preventative action we implemented just hours before the PlayStation 5 event on Nov. 25 blocked more than 20 million bot attempts within the first 30 minutes alone.

The PS5 was released in the US and UK on November 12 and November 19, respectively. The console has been hit by scalper groups that have generated millions in profits by reselling them on eBay, something which the UK government wants to take action against.
