PlayStation 2 is still most played console in NA

According to study done by Nielsen, the PlayStation 2 is still the number one console in North America in terms of actual playing time. Even though next generation consoles have been out for as long as three years up to this point, the install base of Sony’s last generation outing is so large that it’s dominating the charts like always. Apparently, only 37.9% of playing time is coming from all three next generation systems. Considering the install base of each, it’s easy to see why.

The PlayStation 2 is getting almost a third of the playing time across the nation at a staggering 31.7%. Sadly, Sony’s other console, the PlayStation 3 is showing up at a disappointing 7.3%. It’s made even worse given the fact that not only both current generation consoles are being played more, but the original Xbox is receiving more play time and the GameCube (4.6%) isn’t exactly far behind.

The data was collected from January 2008 to October 2008, so perhaps, just maybe, Sony’s black beauty gained a couple of percentage points since then. It wouldn’t be too much of a stretch to assume such considering the blockbuster titles released in late October and November.

How many of you are still out there playing your PS2s?
