PlayStation 3 to receive DVR functionality next year

Sony Computer Entertainment New Zealand head of sales and marketing Warwick Light has divulged plans to release a digital tuner for PlayStation 3 at some point during early 2008.

Speaking to New Zealand-based website Stuff.co.nz, Light detailed plans to "transform the PS3 capabilities so as to meet people’s changing entertainment needs”, revealing "We’re also hoping next year – about the same time that Freeview launches its terrestrial broadcasting service – to release a digital tuner for the PS3, turning it into a programmable TV recorder.”

Given that Freeview launches in the region from next March, it’s conceivable the digital tuner could also arrive at around the same time; furthermore, many anticipate a formal announcement of the device to transpire at the upcoming Leipzig Games Convention later this month, though Sony remains tight-lipped on the matter.

Elsewhere, Light touched on the firm’s plans for the future of the PlayStation brand, implying it may be another decade until the PS3’s successor sees the light of day: "It could be anywhere between seven and 10 years before the next (Sony) console comes out, and to bridge that gap you need considerable technology", he said.

Stay tuned for more details as they break.
