The Guinness World Records has named PlayStation as the ‘best-selling home video game console on brand in history.’
This probably isn’t a surprise, considering Sony’s PS2 is the best-selling single home console in history, while PSOne also performed strongly. Throw in PS3 and PS4, and there’s not really any other console brand that can possibly compete – even Nintendo can’t top that.
The original PlayStation shipped over 100 million units within a decade of its 1994 launch, while PS2 reached 155 million units sold by the end of 2012. Meanwhile, the PS3 moved 87.4 million by the end of March 2017, and the PS4 shipped 117.2 million units as of March 31, 2022.
In terms of handheld platforms, the PSP moved 80 million units by November 2013 while its successor, the PS Vita, is estimated to have sold 15-16 million units, although Sony has never officially revealed how many units the device has moved.
