The CEO of Sony Business Group doesn’t feel that advancements in artificial intelligence will ever replace the ‘human touch’ of video games developed by real individuals.
Speaking with the BBC in celebration of the 30th anniversary of PlayStation, which launched on December 3, 1994 in Japan, Hermen Hulst acknowledged that AI is having an impact on game development, but maintained that it is important to maintain a balance between the application of AI and human developers.
I suspect there will be a dual demand in gaming: one for AI-driven innovative experiences and another for handcrafted, thoughtful content. Striking the right balance between leveraging AI and preserving the human touch will be crucial.

AI has become a major topic in gaming the past couple of years, as many companies have started implementing it in the development process to ease the workload on basic tasks. For example, Electronic Arts CEO Andrew Wilson said earlier this year that its developers have a ‘real hunger‘ to use Generative AI to speed up development, while a report in July claimed that people at Riot, EA, and Activision are being forced to utilise the technology.
