Pocketpair Boss Unsure Whether Palworld Will Become A Live-Service Game

Takuro Mizobe, the CEO of Palworld developer Pocketpair, has revealed during an interview with ASCII.jp that he’s unsure yet whether the game will turn into a live-service effort down line.

When asked about the future of Palwordl, Mizobe saids “to be honest, things aren’t decided yet” and went on to note that while transitioning to a live-service experience would be good for business, the amount of effort involved may not make the end result worth it.

When you think about it from a business perspective, making it a live-service game would extend its lifespan and make it more stable in terms of profitability. However, the game was not initially designed with that approach in mind, so there would be many challenges involved in taking it down the live-service path.

It is common for live-service games to be free-to-play with paid elements such as skins and battle passes, but Palworld is a buy-to-play game, so it’s difficult to turn it into a live-service game from the ground up.

Palworld was originally released for PC, Xbox Series X/S and Xbox One via Early Access in January 2024, and while there has been speculation about a PS5 version, nothing official has been confirmed. Most recently, it appeared on a list of games set to appear at the Tokyo Game Show 2024.
