According to MCV (via VideoGamer), the PlayStation 4 shifted in the region of 139,000 units in the U.K. on Black Friday, beating the Xbox One by just 5,000 units.
Microsoft’s console moved around 134,000 units in the same period, with 42,000 units shifted between Wii, Wii U, Nintendo 3DS and PlayStation Vita. The data was compiled November 22 and November 28, excluding the equally lucrative Cyber Monday in the process.
Sony and Microsoft were both engaged in a hefty price battle during the Black Friday period, with deals for PS4 starting at around £239.99 and Xbox One being available for an even lower price of £219.99. In addition to topping Microsoft’s console, the PS4 also recorded a year-on-year increase of 28.6 percent in Black Friday sales, while FIFA 16 came out on top as the best-selling game for the bus shopping period.
The PS4’s success in the U.K. over Black Friday mirrors a similar scenario in North America, where data showed that the console was the biggest-selling hardware for retail giant Best Buy.
Sony’s current-generation console has had a massively successful year overall, with worldwide sales of the system reaching 30.2 million. 11.7 million were shifted between January and November 2015 alone, cementing the console’s lead over the Xbox One in the process. Microsoft has even admitted that Xbox One may not be able to catch up to its leading rival, which is already tracking well ahead of the PS2 in the U.K.
