PS4 vs Xbox One: NPD results for August 2016 see Microsoft on top again

The NPD Group (via VentureBeat) has confirmed that PlayStation 4 was outsold in the U.S. last month by the Xbox One, marking the second month in a row that Microsoft has managed to top its lead rival in the monthly hardware battle.

Microsoft recently launched the Xbox One S, a slimmer version of its flagship gaming system, which has been widely attributed to the surge in sales for the console over the summer period. Prior to that, Sony had been topping the hardware charts every month since November 2015.

Sony however will soon be launching its own slimmer model of the PS4, which will be released in most major territories by September. The new console will replace the existing PS4 model, and will retail at a wallet-friendly £259/$299

In addition, the format holder announced earlier this week that the PS4 Pro, an upgraded version of the three-year-old console offering improved visuals and frame rate, will ship on November 10, 2016.

The PS4 Pro boasts improved hardware specifications, and is roughly twice as powerful as the standard PS4. Despite this, Sony has insisted the new hardware is not designed to kick-start a new console generation.

One area that PS4 Pro is not embracing is 4K Blu-ray support, a decision recently defended by Sony due to an uptake in streaming multimedia content among consumers.
