The company responsible for selling customised PS5 faceplates, customizemyplates.com, has looked to crowdfunding to resurrect operations after it was forced to shut up shop due to legal threats made by Sony.
PS5 Faceplate Company Seeks Crowdfunding
The company has now hit up Gofundme to resume its faceplate business, after polling users on Twitter if they would be interested in a crowdfunding model for faceplates. A statement issued to VGC however did not make clear if it had settled any legal issue with Sony.
However, a source at a major third-party peripheral company suggested that crowdfunding would help negate legal threats from the PlayStation console maker.
My guess is that Sony won’t be able to control this in the long run. There will be tons of companies making these faceplates and Sony will be powerless to stop them.
If we look at something like a controller, Sony can reasonably battle unofficial third parties by updating the console firmware and blocking such knock offs, but a faceplate? There’s not much they can do in the long run. Sony can’t stop them making bits of plastic that just happen to fit their system.
The PS5 hits the UK and Europe on November 19.
