PS5 Slim Console Covers Aren’t Fully Compatible With The PS5 Pro

UPDATE 01/11/24: In a statement provided to IGN, it has been confirmed by PlayStation that the Reddit poster below was correct, and the PS5 console covers currently available to buy – some even from Sony – are not compatible with the PS5 Pro.

“PS5 console covers are not compatible with PS5 Pro,” the statement says. “However, players will be able to swap out different console covers for PS5 Pro when they become available in the future.”

So as expected, there are special console covers coming that’ll be designated as “PS5 Pro compatible,” that PlayStation will surely sell you in the near future.

But as stated below, the bottom half of the current PS5 console covers are still compatible with the Pro, which means that any of the covers you already own are still half-useful, if you’re planning on grabbing a PS5 Pro.

Original Story 30/10/24:

The PS5 Pro is out next week – in fact a week and a day, at time of writing – and plenty of people are looking forward to the mid-gen refresh, with their current PS5’s halfway out the door.

Halfway is also how far you’ll get if you have any special console side plates for your PS5 Slim and want to use them on the PS5 Pro. A photo on posted to the PlayStation Reddit page (spotted by Wario64 on Twitter) shows that while the bottom half of the covers used on your PS5 Slim can still be used on your Pro, the top covers will not work.

“I had some Cobalt blue plates so I decided to try them out on the Pro and I can confirm the bottom plates match the slim however the top plates do not match,” wrote user Zrorro. In the photo, you can see that the bottom plates have clearly been attached to the Pro model, but the top is bare.

The simple truth, as Zrorro points out, is that despite the covers for the top plates appearing to be the same size, “The teeth that connect to the system are and slightly different places. So you can’t connect the top part.”

They also clarify that the whole reason for this post is to warn soon-to-be PS5 Pro owners, who may have thought their Slim edition plates would be transferable, or anyone who simply thought they could order the Slim covers for their Pro.

So the plates aren’t wholly compatible, and if you really want a matching set you’ll have to buy PS5 Pro-specific console covers. But if you already own a set of plates for the PS5 Slim, you could still mix-and-match with different top colors, if you wanted.

None of this matters if you’re going from a launch model PS5 to a PS5 Pro, of course, since the design of the side plates changed with the Slim. So if that’s you, just make sure you buy the right plates.
