PS6 Will Seemingly Support A Form Of FSR Frame Generation, Hints Mark Cerny

Sony’s Mark Cerny has confirmed that a type of FSR Frame Generation will be available on PlayStation down the line, suggesting it will be supported by the PS6.

Just to clarify a few things about the collaboration with AMD, the new PSSR uses the same core co-developed algorithm as FSR Redstone’s Upscaling (to avoid confusion, I’ll use the new names today rather than FSR 4). FSR Frame Generation is also based on co-developed technology (or as my good friend [from AMD] Jack Huynh puts it, ‘co-engineered technology’). I’m very happy with how that work is progressing, and an equivalent frame generation library should be seen at some point on PlayStation platforms.

Cerny was asked when the technology would see the light of day, to which he responded that Sony has “no more releases planned for this year […] and I look forward to discussing this more in the future.” While he doesn’t mention PS6 explicitly, it’s very likely he’s talking about Sony’s next-generation system, particularly as the new system is being rumoured to launch in late 2027.

Sony has just updated its PSSR (PlayStation Spectral Super Resolution) for PS5 Pro owners, which was made available earlier this month in a new system update.

The technology that will define PS6 comes off the back of a collaboration with AMD known as Project Amethyst. Speaking in a video last October alongside Jack Huynh, Senior Vice President & General Manager of Computing and Graphics Group for AMD, Cerny touched on Radiance Cores and Universal Compression, noting he’s “really excited about bringing them to a future console in a few years time,” which is obviously PS6.
