The infiltration of Sony’s PlayStation Network service by hackers in mid-April has highlighted the “need” for “robust online security,” says UK Chancellor, George Osborne.
Speaking in London yesterday (via Develop), Osborne stated emphatically that online service providers must learn from the PSN crisis, which saw millions of users’ personal information compromised.
“The hacking into Sony’s online PlayStation Network, and the theft of millions of users’ credit card details, is a high profile example of the need for robust online security,” said Osborne.
He went on to say that “this age of digitised public services creates challenges alongside opportunities – the challenge of ensuring the security of personal data and financial information.”
PSN was pulled offline on April 19 as a result of an “external intrusion." Sony is currently rolling out a phased restoration process for the service, which includes a ‘Welcome Back’ package for customers.
