While Sony said last Sunday it believed it would restore access to the PlayStation Network within a week, it now appears you will have to wait longer to play online, synch your Trophies, or chat with your friends. According to Sony’s latest update, via the PlayStation Blog, comprehensive security checks and testing are still required before the system is brought back online.
Sony did not officially delay the tentative schedule for PSN restoration, but the latest update certainly doesn’t sound promising. Patrick Seybold, senior director of corporate communications & social media for Sony Computer Entertainment America, reaffirmed Sony’s commitment to security. He said, “As you’ve heard us say, our utmost priorities are the security of the network and ensuring your data is safe. We won’t restore the services until we can test the system’s strength in these respects.”
On Thursday the news sounded a bit more promising as Sony said it was in the final stages of testing the new network. The same day CEO Howard Stringer apologized to the millions of PSN users through an online letter. All of this comes after last month’s attack on the PSN in which hackers allegedly stole more than 70 million users’ account details and potentially credit card information. Sony still does not believe hackers had access to users’ credit card details, but that hasn’t stopped them from providing yearlong security services to all those impacted by the attack.
“When we held the press conference in Japan last week, based on what we knew, we expected to have the services online within a week,” Seybold wrote. “We were unaware of the extent of the attack on Sony Online Entertainment servers, and we are taking this opportunity to conduct further testing of the incredibly complex system. We know many of you are wanting to play games online, chat with your friends and enjoy all of the services PlayStation Network and Qriocity services have to offer, and trust me when I say we’re doing everything we can to make it happen. We will update you with more information as soon as we have it. We apologize for the delay and inconvenience of this network outage.”
We’ve also heard rumors of a new security threat to Sony, but the company made no mention of this in its latest update.
