The PSPgo was probably not as successful as Sony had hoped, that’s a given. But it turns out the digital-only iteration of the PSP was a bit of an experiment.
Sony Computer Entertainment Europe’s Andrew House told MCV that the company has learned quite a lot from the PSPgo experience, including learning that consumers want physical media.
“It was introduced in a mature lifecycle to learn more about what the consumer wanted and we’ve definitely learnt a lot,” says House. “Is that measured by success in sales? I don’t think it is.
House says Sony believed consumers wanted digital content. He says Sony was “getting signals from consumers that this was the kind of device that they wanted.”
He went on to admit that consumers like “their packaged media library.”
We can come up with other reasons why the PSPgo didn’t do as well as Sony would have liked, mainly the price tag and lack of availability of some games – at least on time. Let’s see what Sony has up its sleeve for E3 regarding the PSP.
