Resident Evil 1 Remake Is Not In The Works Right Now, RE Zero & CODE: Veronica Are Next Remakes Says Insider

Capcom is not working on a remake of the original Resident Evil, according to X user Dusk Golem, a known insider who has provided numerous insight into the franchise over the years.

Asked by a fan if a Resident Evil 1 remake was in the pipeline, Golem stated that as far as he’s aware the game is not planned for an overhaul, with the next remakes being the previously-rumoured Resident Evil Zero and Resident Evil CODE: Veronica. However, that doesn’t mean RE1 won’t be remade at some point down the line.

As far as I know and last I heard, at the moment no. The next mainline remakes coming should be Resident Evil Zero & Code Veronica. I do think a RE1 RE-Remake will happen eventually, just it’s not what’s coming in the next few years, & as far as I know not currently in dev.

This directly counters a report from 2024 that claimed a Resident Evil 1 Remake was in the pipeline to coincide with the series’ 30th anniversary in March 2026. Of course, we already have a remake of Resident Evil available on PS3 and PS4, which is a high-definition version of the superb 2002 GameCube release.

Capcom hasn’t announced anything about remaking Resident Evil Zero or CODE: Veronica yet, but as Dusk Golem noted on X, both games were among the most-requested from fans during a survey sent out by Capcom a few years ago. The remake of Zero is reportedly being handled by M-Two, the team who worked on the Separate Ways Campaign for RE4 Remake, and includes members of the original 2002 GameCube release.

Resident Evil Zero is a prequel that follows S.T.A.R.S. Bravo Team member, Rebecca Chambers, and escaped prisoner Billy Coen as the become caught up in the initial T-Virus outbreak in the Arklay Mountains 24 hours before the events of RE1. Resident Evil CODE: Veronica meanwhile is set three months after RE2, and follows Claire Redfield, as she is captured by Umbrella and taken to a remote island that suffers a viral outbreak.

Resident Evil Requiem, the next major instalment in the survival horror franchise, is due out on February 27, 2026 for PS5, PC, and Xbox Series X/S.
