Last week, EA announced that it would be laying off 670 people across the whole company, and part of that meant to cancellation of projects like Respawn’s no longer upcoming Star Wars FPS game.
However not all is lost on Respawn making Star Wars games and FPS games. Apex Legends will continue to be around for the foreseeable future, and the Jedi series of games are still a-go.
And according to a new report, there’s another project that is still swimming in the wake of this mass wave of layoffs, and that’s the one being led by former Titanfall director Steve Fuduka, which is now claimed to be set within the Titanfall universe.
Before you get your hopes up though, it’s also reportedly not Titanfall 3. This all comes from Jeff Grubb on his Games Mess Mornings show, where Grubb claims to reveal a few unknown details about what Fuduka is up to.
“There are always conversation about Titanfall 3. Whenever I do look into it, they’re not making Titanfall 3, they just straight up aren’t.”
But just as Apex Legends exists within the Titanfall universe, with EA’s recent shift towards emphasizing IP that it owns, the team Fuduka is leading could very well be on a journey to future expand that universe.
“They do have another team that has been kicking around a skunkworks project, that was in very early [prototyping].
There’s different phases of prototyping, there’s a very early, very small team prototyping phase, and now they’re going to a go to a wider, like this is a real project now, but still in the prototyping phase, and that has happened with that game, and that is from the director of the original Titanfall.
This game, as it stands today, as far as I understand, is a ‘Titanfall game,’ it’s in the Titanfall universe. But everyone I talk to keeps saying, well it’s not, don’t get in your mind that it’s Titanfall 3, like a game with online multiplayer and a single-player campagin.
I’m like, well wait, what, then how is, what is this game? I still don’t know. But it feels like, if you are trying to go all-in on your own IP, just expand that into being Titanfall 3, figure out a way to make that happen.
And then I’m reminded that they were working on Titanfall 3 essentially with Titanfall Legends, which was going to be a part of Apex Legends, and they pulled the rug out from underneath that, so it seems very unlikely that they would change their strategy and go back and actually end up making Titanfall 3.”
Titanfall Legends just might’ve been what fans had been waiting years for before EA cancelled it. Whatever this game is, it’ll be interesting to see where Respawn take the Titanfall universe next.
