Capcom is reportedly going to make Resident Evil 9 the last numbered entry in the long-running horror franchise, instead moving forward with self-contained stories.
That’s at least according to leaker Dusk Golem, who you’ve probably heard of by now, who claims that Resident Evil 7, 8 and 9 all have a closely connected story, as they were all development in close proximity.
You may recall that Dusk Golem previously revealed that Resident Evil 9 is already in the pipeline, although details on the game itself are understandably thin on the ground. Here’s what he had to say on Twitter:
(2/2) RE7>RE8>RE9 have a connected, planned out story as all ended up in dev close together.
I also suspect this is why they want to move past numbered titles after RE9, to tell more self-contained stories rather than have to plan out stories ahead of time, but its cool here.

Beyond Resident Evil 9, the insider also claimed that there’s another game in the pipeline, Resident Evil Outrage, which was also leaked the Capcom data breach late last year and is essentially Resident Evil Revelations 3 in all but name.
Resident Evil Village is the next major entry in the franchise due for release, and will arrive on PS5, PS4, PC, Xbox Series X/S and Xbox One on May 7. Capcom is celebrating the 25th anniversary of the series this year, and will host another showcase later this week.
