Rumour — Bungie Facing ‘Significant’ Layoffs As Destiny 2 Updates End, But Destiny 3 Is Not Yet Greenlit

Bloomberg has claimed that Destiny 2 developer Bungie is facing significant layoffs after revealing plans to stop active development for the shared-world shooter, noting that Destiny 3 has not been greenlit.

The report states that the former Halo developer is going to put much of its focus on Marathon going forward, and a number of Destiny 2 developers have already been reassigned to the project. Worryingly, it claims a “significant” number of job losses are on the horizon, and notes that Bungie hasn’t yet got a project in mind for the team behind Destiny 2 after the release of its final update in June. Furthermore, it states the studio “doesn’t plan to immediately enter production on a Destiny 3.”

Looking ahead, the report states that staff at Bungie are going to pitch new projects — Destiny franchise included — but nothing has been approved yet.

As previously reported, Sony posted a $765 million impairment loss due to the poor performance of Bungie titles during its latest financial quarter, which includes Destiny 2 and Marathon, with the latter reportedly having a budget of at least $200 million.
