Jez Cordon has commented on the latest episode of the Xbox Two Podcast that Fallout 5 has been ‘fully greenlit,’ although at this point it’s unknown exactly what studio will be heading up the project
While development on the highly anticipated next instalment in the post-apocalyptic franchise is now moving forward, Cordon noted that as far as he’s aware, the core teams at Bethesda Game Studios are currently tied up with Starfield DLC and The Elder Scrolls VI. Regardless of what studio is leading development, Fallout 5 is obviously a long way off at this point.

Cordon said that he has heard the general push for Fallout likely comes at the expense of Blackbird, the MMO from ZeniMax Media that was cancelled following the latest round of layoffs at Microsoft.
From what I heard, it was a case of ‘Do we want to sink a ton of money into getting this [project Blackbird] to a point where it can compete with the established players in the market, or do we want to allocate that investment towards making Fallout 5?’
As previously reported, Bethesda’s Todd Howard had confirmed that Fallout 5 will be its next major project after The Elder Scrolls VI. Back in June 2024, Howard briefly touched on the future of the Fallout series in wake of the success of the first season of the Fallout TV series, stating that Bethesda had no plans to rush anything in regards to new entries in the franchise.
Last week, Jordan Middler of VGC stated on the Friends Per Second podcast that multiple Fallout games are currently in production, including ‘one you’re all wanting.’ While nothing was clarified, it is believed this could be the rumoured Fallout 3 Remaster, which was originally leaked during documents pertaining to Microsoft and the FTC’s legal tussle a few years ago.
