Rumour — PS6 Canis Handheld Leak Backs Up Claims PS5 Power Saver Mode Is Being Used To Prep Sony’s New Hardware

It’s been widely reported that Sony Interactive Entertainment is manufacturing a new handheld system, dubbed Canis, to launch alongside the PS6. Now, another leak from reliable hardware tipster Moore’s Law Is Dead has added further credence to previous reports that the PS5’s Power Saver Mode is being used to prep the new device.

Speaking in the latest episode of Broken Silicon, Moore’s Law Is Dead noted that he’s headed from a source that Sony has patched all PS5 development SDKS back to version 1.0 in order to implement Power Save support, even though those kits are “current on 12.0.” He added that Sony didn’t perform this kind of back porting even for the PS5 Pro, hence his claims that Power Save support is internally a major priority for the platform holder.

Additionally, one doc talking about CPU optimizations mentions that there are new Low Power Modes coming eventually, and directly suggests that your games should be runnable on only 8-Threads…it even at one point states: ‘new operation modes may be supported in the future and applications may run in environments with different available CPU configurations’…Sony is definitely preparing a Canis Handheld!

Moore’s Law Is Dead had previously described PS5’s Power Save Mode as a “Trojan horse for getting PS6 handheld support ready before its launch,” noting that he was contacted by a developer who had received emails from Sony requesting they push the low power mode. As for the PS6 handheld itself, it has been previously claimed that Sony is looking to begin manufacturing in mid-2027 with the aim of launching the device and the PS6 in Fall 2026 — Early 2028.

The architecture for Sony’s next-generation is set to be powered by AMD as part of a partnership with Sony known as Project Amethyst.

Earlier this year, a video featuring Mark Cerny and AMD’s Jack Huynh was published by Sony that saw the pair discuss this partnership further, with Cerny noting that he’s “really excited about bringing” next-generation AMD rendering tech and other features “to a future console in a few years time.”

Back in October this year, another hardware insider, KeplerL2, suggested that the PS6 is going to cost around half as much as the new Xbox console from Microsoft, believing Sony’s machine will retail for around $600.

Sony has yet to officially announced the PlayStation 6 or its accompanying handheld device.
