The pricing for SanDisk’s new line of officially licensed PS5 SSDs has been confirmed, and you can expect to pay nearly $3,000 for a top-of-the-range model.
The Optimus GX PRO range offers up to 8TB of storage across an “officially licensed drive for the PlayStation 5 and PlayStation 5 Pro consoles.” In terms of pricing, the 1TB model will set you back $380, a 2TB model costs $720, and a 4TB version carries a price tag of $1500. At the very top of the price list is the 8TB model, which costs $2,960, with ScanDisk noting this is discounted from $3,700.
Sadly, the costs reflect the increasing price of components in a market where AI datacentres are seeing increased demand, resulting in companies having to bump up the cost of consumer electronics. As an example, PC Part Picker noted that a ScanDisk 8GB SSD would have retailed for about $640 less just one year ago, which is an increase of 370%.
Back in March, Sony announced that it would be increasing the cost of the PS5, PS5 Pro, and PS Portal on April 2, citing “pressures in the global economic landscape” but deemed it necessary in order to to “continue delivering innovative, high-quality gaming experience to players worldwide.” As a result, the PS5 costs $649.99, PS5 Digital Edition is at $599.99, and the PS5 Pro retails for $899.99.
In regards to Sony’s as-yet unannounced next-generation system, hardware leaker Kepler_L2 has suggested that the PS6 could cost around half the price of Microsoft’s new system.
