Seiji Aoki, head of Sega’s Legacy Virtua Fighter development team, has revealed during an interview with GameSpot that a possible collection of classic Virtua Fighter games (and possible other SEGA-developed brawlers like Fighting Vipers) is ‘something to consider.’
I’ve definitely seen those compilations and thought, ‘We should do something like that.’ …By doing that, we could bring back the old fans in addition to bringing in new fans. It’s something to consider.

After keeping out of the spotlight for a number of years, the Virtua Fighter series is in the process of making a major comeback, as a brand new instalment is currently in development at Like A Dragon creators Ryu Ga Gotoku Studio. Beyond that, SEGA is also re-releasing Virtua Fighter 5 again under the moniker Virtua Fighter 5 R.E.V.O., which is coming to PS5, PC, Nintendo Switch 2, and Xbox Series X/S with full Cross-Play support.
The original Virtua Fighter was masterminded by Yu Suzuki, who would go on to helm the Shenmue franchise, and launched in December 1993 as is widely recognised as the first 3D fighting game. Following its initial arcade release, Virtua Fighter was ported to the Sega Saturn and 32X in 1994 and 1995, respectively.
