Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice Ashina Outskirts Guide - Items, Enemies, Secrets

The Ashina Outskirts is the first main area of Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice and it has a lot of things to do, including a lot of things to miss. However, this walkthrough will show you all of the secrets and items you can pick up.

Ashina Outskirts – The Dilapidated Temple

After the Ashina Reservoir area, you will wake up in The Dilapidated Temple and have a quick cutscene with the Sculptor. Once that has finished talk to him to ask him some questions and get some information on the game’s world. On the left of this room is a sculpture that can’t be used yet. However, you can get a bit of lore by interacting with it.

Now if you head outside you can find a Sculptor’s Idol. These act as checkpoints when you interact with them. As the game continues more options at the Idol will open up. Next to it is a Pellet which can be picked up. Behind the temple is a Light Coin Purse. As a general tip, do not use Coin Purses until you are at a shop to buy items, as upon death you will lose half of it permanently.

The left path holds a shortcut which is opened up from the other side. The right path has another NPC you can talk to: Hanbei The Undying. He is a training dummy who allows you to test out your skills and upgrades which you will get later on. He will become a very useful person. Next to him is the Offering Box. This Box will hold any items that you miss or leave on the enemy’s corpses.

Now, head down the main path. You will need to use your grappling hook to cross the chasm. Then, jump up the wall and ledge hang to climb it. Now you will reach the main area of the Ashina Outskirts.

Use your grapple hook to jump down to the Sculptor’s Idol and interact with it.

Ashina Outskirts – The Cliffs

From that Idol, jump up the rocks to find an item: Ungo’s Sugar. This will reduce the damage you take from physical attacks for a limited amount of time when it is used.

Across the way, on a large flat platform with a building is an enemy. Head over there and kill him. Drop back down, and head below where the Idol is, grappling onto the gate structure. Jump onto the enemy and hit R1 to kill him. Next to that enemy, you can find a Pellet. North of that, up the path, is a Ceramic Shard which will pull enemies towards you, if they are in a large group. It can also be used to distract them.

Continue up the path and kill both of the enemies. Head around the left side and hug the wall. Head into the grass and crouch. You can stealth kill one of them whilst in the grass. Pull another one towards you with the Ceramic Shard. After that is done, kill the third one. Next to the sandbags by the gate, you can find another Ungo’s Sugar.

Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice Ashina Outskirts Guide - Items, Enemies, Secrets

Up where the enemy with a gun was, you can find a Pellet and a Fistful of Ash. The latter will stun enemies for a few seconds when it is thrown at them. Now head back up to the large platform with the building and grapple up to the roof. Kill the patrolling enemy on the other side and pick up a Ceramic Shard. To your right, below the cliff is a cave. inside is some Ako’s Sugar, which will increase your attack power for a short while.

Now, head through the open gate, just next to you. There are three wolfs here. You can either dodge their attacks and swing back or deflect their attacks and slice their throats with a Shinobi Deathblow instantly. Along the path is another Ceramic Shard. To the right, on a rock is another Sculptor’s Idol.

Ashina Outskirts – Outskirts Wall – Gate Path

Now, The Ashina Gates will be your first real challenge. Grapple into the opening in the gate ahead of you. Inside you will find the Shuriken Wheel. This is a new Prosthetic Tool, which allows you to throw Shurikens at enemies. You can fit it onto your prosthetic at The Sculptor in The Dilapidated Temple. You can travel there from any Idol.

Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice Ashina Outskirts Guide - Items, Enemies, Secrets

Head outside, through the other hole in the wall. Turn to your left and climb up the wall by grabbing the ledge. At the top is a Pellet. Now, jump across using the grapple hook on the tree branch. Up here is a giant rooster, which is nightmare inducing. It isn’t too hard to defeat though.

Beneath you, along the main path is a mini-boss: General Naomori Kawarada. Mini-bosses have 2 healthbars and require you to perform two Shinobi Deathblows to kill them. If you can stealth attack him from behind, you can eliminate one of these healthbars immediately. This can be done by going behind him or getting his attention until you hit a yellow arrow and then walking up behind him when he is returning to his position.

The key to defeating him is to deflect his attacks. He will do a low sweep when the red icon pops up. For this, you need to jump over it. Overall, he can be a challenge; however, after a few tries, you will get him. His death will grant you a Prayer Bead which can be used to upgrade your health and posture once you have 4 of them. You will also get a Gourd Seed.

Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice Ashina Outskirts Guide - Items, Enemies, Secrets

Mini-bosses do not respawn. Therefore, I suggest going back to the Idol and travelling to the Dilapidated Temple. Here you will meet Emma, she is a nurse of sorts and will take the Gourd Seed you just got. By giving the seed to her the number of times your Healing Gourd can be used will increase.

Back to where you fought the General, to the left of the giant gate, you can pick up a Fistful of Ash.

Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice Ashina Outskirts Guide - Items, Enemies, Secrets

Now, grapple on top of the Gate. This area has a lot of enemies and can be overwhelming. There are four guards that patrol, one to your left below the square platform, another in the house, two more on the platform on the right, and a hammer-wielding large enemy behind that platform.

Head to your left and onto that square platform. Wait for the guards to patrol past you. Then jump down and Shinobi Deathblow the one guard standing still.

Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice Ashina Outskirts Guide - Items, Enemies, Secrets

Then, grapple into the house and stealth kill the one guard. Wait for the guards to patrol around again and grapple to the branch on the platform on the right. Stealth kill one enemy and then fight the other. Now, head back to the platform where you killed the first enemy. Stealth kill one enemy in the patrol and then fight the other three. You can get overwhelmed, but just retreat if you are in danger.

Finally, head back up to the platform with the branch on the right. Jump down behind it. Next to the tree is the large hammer-wielding enemy. Stealth kill it from behind to dispatch of it with ease.

Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice Ashina Outskirts Guide - Items, Enemies, Secrets

Now, we are going to pick up the items in this area. Inside the broken house where you killed the enemy, you can find a Ceramic Shard. Below that, on the floor beneath is a Mibu Balloon of Wealth. This will increase the amount of coin you earn for a limited amount of time.

Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice Ashina Outskirts Guide - Items, Enemies, Secrets

Now head to the lower level of this area. There is a house with a woman in it. If you talk to her she will give you the Young Lord’s Bell Charm. This can be used at the sculpture in the Dilapidated Temple. Doing this will unlock an entirely new area called the Hirata Estate.

Now, if you hop out and into the grass you can kill 2 more giant roosters. Nightmare-inducing. There is an opening in the wall which you can go through once you destroy the pots blocking the way. Crouch and head inside. Inside you can find three Light Coin Purses.

Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice Ashina Outskirts Guide - Items, Enemies, Secrets

Head up the slope to the side and you will find a wounded soldier on the ground. You will quickly learn that he is the woman’s son. There isn’t much you can do here for now.

Now, progress forward and you will find a grapple point on the left. Use it and head up to the left. Directly above you is another grapple point. Up here is the Memorial Mob Shop. Here you can purchase a few items. Make sure you buy the Robert’s Firecrackers Shinobi Prosthetic. This tool will allow you to stun beasts, which will be useful for the boss of the Ashina Outskirts.

Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice Ashina Outskirts Guide - Items, Enemies, Secrets

Now, if you look across to the broken building where you defeated an enemy, you can pick up another Light Coin Purse from the roof. Back on the main path, there are four sword-wielding enemies and one foe with a giant cannon. What you want to do is grapple up to your left and sneak around past these enemies. Once at the giant gate you can cross the platform to stealth kill the enemy with a cannon. He will give you some Black Gunpowder which is used to upgrade Prosthetic Tools.

Another enemy will be standing at the top of the stairs just below you. Stealth kill him as well. The final three enemies can be killed in any way you want. On the other side of the smaller gate, you can pick up a Pellet. Now, head all the way back up to the Idol that you started at.

Climb up the structure in front of you and head to the cliff on the left. Position yourself so that you are looking in the direction of the house with the old woman in it. Look down and you will find a platform below you. Jump down and on your right is a small cave. Inside that cave is a Bundled Jizo Statue. This will restore a node of resurrection, allowing you to revive yourself again.

Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice Ashina Outskirts Guide - Items, Enemies, Secrets

Now, jump to the branch on your right. Just to your right, on the cliff is a Gachiin’s Sugar. This item will make you harder to detect for a period of time. Climb up the rocks on the side of the cliff to return to the gate where you just were. From where you fought those three enemies with swords, if you look off of the platform you will find a tree branch you can grapple to. Once doing that, hop down to the platform below to pick up two Mibu Possession Balloons. These will increase the number of items you get from enemies for a limited amount of time.

Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice Ashina Outskirts Guide - Items, Enemies, Secrets

Continue along and grapple to the next platform. Here you can pick up some Scrap Iron which is used for Prosthetic Tool Upgrades. Grapple to the next platform and hop to the ledge ahead. Grapple to the branch behind where you just came from. Now, look up to find a grapple point which will take you back to the large gate.

Grapple past that gate and kill the rooster on the right. If you hop down you can interact with a Remnant, which will provide you with an insight into what the young Heir has been doing.

Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice Ashina Outskirts Guide - Items, Enemies, Secrets

Upon your right is another Sculptor’s Idol.

Ashina Outskirts – Outskirts Wall – Stairway

Past the idol, there are two enemies on the ground. If you head around to the left you can find a Pellet on the square platform above them. Jump onto one of them and kill them with a deathblow. Then, murder the other.

Up ahead is a mini-boss: The Chained Ogre. He has wide-reaching attacks and can be quite deadly. The first thing to note is that you can deflect his attacks, even though he is giant and it looks like you should not be able to block and deflect. He is weak to the Flame vent Shinobi Prosthetic which can be found in the Hirata Estate area.

The best tactic is to get a few hits in and then dodge and jump out of the way. You want to watch out for his lunge. He will launch himself forward and grab you. this can be hard to dodge. In order to do so, you will need to jump to the side, rather than use circle to dodge. His grab should be dodged by stepping backwards. This fight is really about endurance and just staying calm and collected. It can take a while to get him, but it will happen.

Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice Ashina Outskirts Guide - Items, Enemies, Secrets

Defeating him will grant you a Prayer Bead as well as the passive upgrade Shinobi Medicine Rank 1. This is automatically equipped and will increase how much you are healed when using healing items.

There is one more enemy here on the platform above you. He has a spear and can be deadly. The slope next to where the ogre was holds a Mibu Balloon of Wealth. Now grapple up to the walkway ahead. The right side holds a shortcut that cannot be opened yet. On the left side, you will find a Gourd Seed and a Ceramic Shard. Right in-front of you is the Nightjar Monocular which acts as a set of binoculars to see far off objects.

Do not head out of that opening, instead head right and go out through the hole in the wall. Then head to the patch of grass on your right.

Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice Ashina Outskirts Guide - Items, Enemies, Secrets

This area has a lot of enemies. The General mini-boss is in the middle of the area, there is a guy up on the platform who will alert the other enemies of your presence, and there are around 5 grunts. From where you are, head along the platform and stealth kill the enemy up here.

My strategy here is to kill a couple of enemies and then return back to the grass where you just where to lose the enemies. Jump down and kill a couple of the enemies to thin out the herd. Once you are overwhelmed, jump back up to the platform and hide in the grass. Once that is done, do the same again. Ideally, you want to be left with just the General.

Once he has lost sight of you and sheathed his sword, you should sneak up behind him to get rid of one of his healthbars. The tactics for fighting General Tenzen Yamauchi are the exact same as the previous General earlier in the level. Once you beat him you will get another Prayer Bead.

Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice Ashina Outskirts Guide - Items, Enemies, Secrets

Down in the arena where he was you can find some Scrap Iron against the wall.

Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice Ashina Outskirts Guide - Items, Enemies, Secrets

Head through the large gate to find some Divine Confetti next to a set of rocks.

Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice Ashina Outskirts Guide - Items, Enemies, Secrets

Now, this next area is far too difficult right now; however, we are going to open up the shortcut from earlier. Head past the small hut and the sign on it. Grapple to the branch and below you is a ledge you can grab onto. Jump to it and hit square to hold onto it at the right time.

Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice Ashina Outskirts Guide - Items, Enemies, Secrets

Shimmy along and climb onto the ledge. Here you can pick-up some Gachiin’s Sugar. Then jump down to the platform below you. Head inside the cave. You will reach a large drop with an enemy all the way down. This enemy is far too tough. Instead, head to your right and up the path.

Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice Ashina Outskirts Guide - Items, Enemies, Secrets

Grapple up to your right three times and across the chasm to the branch. Head up through the opening in the building. Here are two small lizards who will inflict poison if you are hit by them. Just next to the second one, in the building is another Gachiin’s Sugar.

Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice Ashina Outskirts Guide - Items, Enemies, Secrets

Inside the building, you can find the door to open the shortcut, Antidote Powder, and Divine Grass. The former increases your poison resistance and the latter will heal you and remove all status effects.

If you want to take on the enemy in that cave I recommend having at least 12 Vitality and an attack power of 5. You will also want to bring at least 2 Divine Confetti and 5 Pacifying Agent. The enemy below is a mini-boss called the Headless. He does not take much damage from your regular sword. Therefore, you will want to apply the Divine Confetti before you drop down. This will allow you to deal a decent amount of damage to him with your sword.

Once you drop down, apply a Pacifying Agent as he will cause terror, which will instantly kill you. You will want to refresh the Pacifying Agent every thirty-to-forty seconds.

Any sword attacks he performs can be deflected, providing you have enough posture. You will likely have to take a few hits. If he disappears he will spawn behind you, so you want to turn around. Your goal is to attack whilst he is in-between attacks. Once your Divine Confetti has run out, move back and apply another one. You will probably have to go through three.

Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice Ashina Outskirts Guide - Items, Enemies, Secrets

Once you beat him you will get Ako’s Spiritfall. This will increases your Vitality and Posture damage for a time at the cost of Spirit Emblems. If you head behind you can find a note at the end of the path and a hidden wall. This will lead you to Senpou Temple, Mt. Kongo. This is an area for later in the game.

Now, head back to the General’s arena and to the bridge in the far back. Look down to your left to find a Sculptor’s Idol. Behind it, right underneath the bridge is a Pellet.

Ashina Outskirts – Underbridge Valley

At the start of this area, I recommend going back to the Dilapidated Temple and speaking with the Sculptor and Emma. Here she will take to you about the sickness called Dragonrot. You can then go back to the old woman in the house and get a blood sample from her. Take this back to Emma and she will give you an item to heal all of those inflicted with the illness.

Back to the main path, you should do this area blind without reading this as it is awesome and incredible.

Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice Ashina Outskirts Guide - Items, Enemies, Secrets

If you have decided to read this part then full spoilers ahead. Cross the canyon until you reach the rock-face with a few candles. Hug the wall nearby and you will see a gigantic snake pop out. This area requires you to sneak past it. Whenever the head is not facing you, you can progress. Jump across and down to the grass below you and hide. Once its head turns, jump across and into the cave.

In the next area, hug the wall in front of you. Once he starts looking to your right, head up next to his body and jump across to the ledge. Pull yourself up and hide in the grass.

Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice Ashina Outskirts Guide - Items, Enemies, Secrets

When he is looking behind you sneak to the second patch of grass and shimmy along the wall. You will want to head up to that tent and get inside. it is actually a palanquin. Eventually, the snake will put his eye next to the palanquin. Hit R1 when the Shinobi Deathblow icon pops up.

The snake will now start flailing around. Rush up to the item on the cliff edge ahead of you. They are Snap Seeds, which will break illusion techniques used by some enemies. Run past the palanquin and grapple up to the branch past the opening in the rocks.

Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice Ashina Outskirts Guide - Items, Enemies, Secrets

Wait for the snake to hit his head against the next platform, then jump up and grapple to safety. Once through the small cave, grapple across the chasm and up the two rocks. Along the second one is an item. These are Ako’s Sugar which will boost your attack power for a limited amount of time.

Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice Ashina Outskirts Guide - Items, Enemies, Secrets

Head back to where you grappled up and climb onto the tiling. Sneak around to find another Sculptor’s Idol. Next to it is some Gachiin’s Sugar.

Ashina Outskirts – Ashina Castle Gate Fortress

This next area has a few enemies. Head back down to where you grappled to from the cave after the snake. Hang on this ledge here. Stealth kill this giant thing with a mace. You should not be noticed by then enemies doing this.

Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice Ashina Outskirts Guide - Items, Enemies, Secrets

Now, kill the gunner in the house to your left. The final three enemies can be defeated in any way you wish. Behind the building where you killed the gunner, you can find some Ungo’s Sugar. In the bottom floor of that building, you can pick up a Ceramic Shard, Mibu Balloon of Wealth, and a Heavy Coin Pouch.

Above the arena is another Remnant you can interact with.

Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice Ashina Outskirts Guide - Items, Enemies, Secrets

Head up the stairs and kill the enemy mourning the death of his horse. Here you can pick-up a Fistful of Ash next to the horse. There is one more enemy patrolling around here. If you head up the next set of stairs you can pick-up a Pellet, as well as see a shortcut which will open up in a little bit.

Jump and grapple to the branch and up to the roof ahead. This is the boss arena. There is a Fistful of Ash on the ground right in front of you. If you want to see how to beat Gyoubu Oniwa you can check out our boss guide.

Once you beat him you will get the Mechanical Barrel which will allow you to upgrade your Shinobi prosthetic when you talk to the Sculptor. You will also receive the ‘Memory – Gyoubu Oniwa’ which can be used at a Sculptor’s Idol to increase your attack power. A new Sculptor’s Idol can be found next to the large gate.

Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice Ashina Outskirts Guide - Items, Enemies, Secrets

Now, if you turn around you will see a set of stairs. Up them is an opening to a building and some more stairs. Head up the stairs to find a ceramic shard and a Memorial Mob shop.

Head inside and talk to the figure. He will introduce himself as Tengu of Ashina. Once he finishes talking he will give you a request to kill some ‘rats’. These are found a little further on, so we will come back to him. To the right is a Pellet and ahead is the door that was closed earlier. To the left is an old woman you can talk to. However, she doesn’t have much to say right now.

Scale the set of stairs inside the building to find a Light Coin Purse. You can actually scale the tower using your grappling hook. Once you reach the upper beams, jump to the middle and hang onto the broken beam in the centre.
