Shuhei Yoshida Admits He Was Surprised To Hear Naughty Dog Wanted To Move Away From Uncharted

Former Sony indie boss Shuhei Yoshida has revealed during an interview with GameSpot that he was initially surprised that Naughty Dog wanted to move away from the Uncharted franchise to work on The Last of Us.

“It was a bit surprising that Naughty Dog wanted to move on from Uncharted, but also that they were going to create something really mature,” adding that while Uncharted does have mature themes, Yoshida-san feels it’s more “a summer blockbuster movie for a very broad audience.”

The former PlayStation executive admitted he was “a little concerned that we may be going too niche by going so mature” with The Last of Us, which obviously has a much darker theme than Uncharted. “In the end, their craft produced such an amazing game that they established an IP even bigger than Uncharted,” he said, adding that he’s “so excited that they are working on a new IP again with Intergalactic.”

Speaking during an interview with Friends Per Second earlier this month, Yoshida-san said that he doesn’t feel that Sony is able to keep improving the graphical capabilities of its hardware as it has been doing, noting that he struggles to tell the difference between various capabilities such as ray-traced and non-ray traced games nowadays.
