Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings star Simu Liu has revealed that his planned Sleeping Dogs movie has a “REAL path forward” as discussions with Square Enix remain ongoing.
Liu was asked by a fan on X for an update on the project, to which he responded: “okay, here it is. we’re moving along really well, we have a director, and a production company, and a REAL path forward. we’re just in the dealmaking process with the game studio rn (which is a total fan moment for me bc i love SquareEnix). your support is fuelling us all!”
Back in October last year, Liu revealed that the first script draft for the Sleeping Dog movie had been completed, and added that talks with Square Enix were progressing well. The Sleeping Dogs was previously set to feature Donnie Yen, but in early 2025 Yen revealed that the project was no longer moving forward at the time. Liu soon revealed that he was hoping to resurrect the project and has been working on doing just that for well over a year now.
Sleeping Dogs was released for PS3, PC and Xbox 360 in 2012 and was remastered for PS4 and Xbox One in 2014 as Sleeping Dogs Definitive Edition. Developer United Front Games was working on a sequel to the game in early 2013, although the project was shelved later that year before full production could begin.
