Sony Confirms All PS5 Games With 3D Audio Will Automatically Get Dolby Atmos Support

All PS5 games that make use of the console’s Tempest 3D Audio will automatically receive support for Dolby Atmos, Loic Couthier, the company’s senior sound design supervisor has revealed on Twitter.

In case you missed it, the latest PS5 system update beta is now available for select users, and among the new features include Dolby Atmos support. However, those games that require bespoke support for this feature will need to be patched.

When asked if “games like Returnal need to be patched to support the new Atmos sound on PS5″ or if it’s enabled autoamtically, Couthier replied:

It’s both. There is an automatic Atmos mix for all existing games that support 3D Audio. For a bespoke Atmos mix made by the sound team, games would need a patch.

If you’re lucky enough to have got in the latest PS5 firmware beta, then you may want to configure your console for Dolby Atmos. Simply head to Settings > Sound > Audio Output > Audio Format (Priority) > Select Dolby Atmos.

Sony recently announced that the PS5 has sold 40 million units worldwide since its launch in November 2020, having overcome major stock shortages brought on by the global COVID-19 pandemic.
