Sony No Longer Offering Free PS4 To PS5 Upgrades On First-Party Titles Beyond Horizon Forbidden West

Sony Interactive Entertainment will no longer offer free PS4 to PS5 upgrades for its first-party titles, its president and CEO has revealed on the PlayStation Blog.

Jim Ryan confirmed that, while Horizon Forbidden West owners on PS4 will be able to freely upgrade to the next-generation version, going forward, all first-party titles from Sony will require consumers to spend $10 to upgrade to PS5. This will apply to the likes of God of War Ragnarok and beyond.

I also want to confirm today that moving forward, PlayStation first-party exclusive cross-gen titles (newly releasing on PS4 & PS5)-both digital and physical-will offer a $10 USD digital upgrade option from PS4 to PS5,” explained Ryan. “This will apply to the next God of War and Gran Turismo 7, and any other exclusive cross-gen PS4 & PS5 title published by Sony Interactive Entertainment.

Last year, Sony announced that all of its launch window PS5 games would offer a free upgrade for players who purchased the PS4 version of a specific title.

However, upon detailing the various special editions of Horizon Forbidden West last week, it became apparent that not only was there to be no free PS4 to PS5 option, but if you wanted Dual Entitlement, you’d have to purchase the Digital Deluxe, Collector’s, or Regalla Editions of the game – all of which were far more expensive than the standard version of the game.

Horizon Forbidden West is due out on PS5 and PS4 on February 18, 2022.
