Sony Says PS5 Is ‘In The Middle Of Its Journey’ As It Hits 5 Years On The Market

The PS5 is currently in the middle of its lifecycle, according to Lin Tao, Chief Financial Officer for Sony.

In the past, most systems would have a five-seven year lifecycle, as evidence by earlier PlayStation consoles. PS3 started the trend for a slightly longer market life, which continued with the PS4 era. However, it appears that Sony may be looking at something longer of the PS5, despite the fact PS6 is heavily rumoured to appear in 2027. Here’s the full quote:

There are many active users enjoying the console, so from that perspective, we believe that the PS5 is only in the middle of the journey, and we are really planning to expand it even further.

Of course, this could simply mean that Sony is looking to keep supporting the PS5 for another five years or so. The PS4 after all received a number of major titles alongside the PS5, so it’s not as if Sony dumps its previous hardware as soon as new system comes out.

As previously reported, Sony announced during its latest financial results that the PS5 has shipped 84.2 million units worldwide, a figure that, according to official data, puts it ahead of any Xbox console released to date.

The PS5 was released in November 2020 during the height of the COVID-19 lockdown, although still managed to enjoy a successful launch despite stock shortages. However, it would be more than 18 months until things stablished and the system was readily available in major markets.
