Sony has announced today that its PlayStation Vue TV service in North America will be shutting down on January 30, 2020.
In a blog post on the PlayStation Blog, John Kodera, Deputy President at Sony Interactive Entertainment stated “that the highly competitive Pay TV industry, with expensive content and network deals, has been slower to change than we expected. Because of this, we have decided to remain focused on our core gaming business.”
The service will remain live until January 30, 2020. However, from January 31, 2020, Entertainment on a PS4 can be watched through the PlayStation Store or by using one of the many apps available for free.
John Kodera also stated that “We are very proud of what PlayStation Vue was able to accomplish. We had ambitious goals for how our service could change how people watch TV, showcasing PlayStation’s ability to innovate in a brand-new category within the Pay TV industry. We want to thank all of our customers, some of whom have been with us since PlayStation Vue’s launch in 2015.”
This news seemingly comes out of nowhere, with the service being around for almost five years. However, the service never expanded beyond North America and the TV market is getting more cluttered as time goes on, with every Television studio launching their own streaming service.
Disney+ is one of those services launching next month. It will be available on PS4 in the United States from the service’s launch on November 12, 2019. Pre-orders for the service are now open to the public.
