Sony has warned analysts that supply shortages for the PS5 could last into 2022, with the console still remaining difficult to acquire on a worldwide basis due to a shortage in semiconductors.
Speaking in wake of the company’s latest financial earnings, in which the hardware manufacturer revealed it had sold 7.8 million consoles worldwide, Hiroki Totoki, Sony’s chief financial officer, warned that things don’t look like they’re going to improve anytime soon.
I don’t think demand is calming down this year and even if we secure a lot more devices and produce many more units of the PlayStation 5 next year, our supply wouldn’t be able to catch up with demand.

The PS5 was released in November 2020 in the US and UK, and after initial stock was sold out for launch day, the system became increasingly more difficult to get hold of, which lead to a new problem in the shape of scalpers, who were quick to capitalise on the situation.
