The Circana survey also revealed that a new game is purchased around once every three months by 22% of video game players in the US, with 10% stating they purchase a title roughly once per month. Only 4% of users purchased a game more than once per month. Piscatella comment that the gamers who fork out for one or more game per month after are largely responsible for “keeping things going, especially in the non f12p gaming space.”

Been talking about this trend for years when it comes to games spending. Why are there premium gamepads, $149 collector’s editions, Pro consoles and general rising prices? Because the price-insensitive, affluent players are the ones doing more of the spending as everyone else shifts more to free-to-play.

Video game prices this console generation have seen some major publishes charge as much as $79.99 for their games, such as Nintendo with Mario Kart World for Switch 2. Microsoft in particular announced that it would be charging this price for its major AAA titles, but notably backtracked on this stance after much backlash, starting with The Outer Worlds 2.
