The CEO of Take-Two has said that he’s disappointed the publisher has not been able to release a new BioShock after numerous delays suffered at the hands of the series’ brand new entry at Cloud Chamber.
Speaking during an interview with Game File, Strauss Zelnick was asked if he was surprised that Take-Two hasn’t been able to release a new BioShock in more than a decade.
Think about what ‘surprise’ implies. That’s like, one day, everything’s awesome, and the next day, I’m like, ‘Holy shit.’ And I don’t run the business that way. But I think if you’re saying ‘disappointed,’ yes. Deeply disappointed.
The executive added that he was “feeling a lot better” about the new BioShock title now. “I think finding the right creative purchase was hard, as it turns out. I think we, in retrospect, wasted a lot of time and money chasing down some creative alleys that turned out to be dead ends. What we do is a big team activity in the same way that making a movie is a team activity. And with big team activities, you can’t necessarily tell how it’s going to be until it all comes together, or begins to come together, and that can take a while and can be very costly.”
Cloud Chamber is currently developing the new BioShock game, although back in August last year it was reported by Bloomberg that 30% of its staff were laid off. As a result, BioShock’s next chapter, which was slated to launch in late 2026/early 2027, has now been delayed and there’s currently no word on when it will see the light of day. The project has reportedly seen a number of revisions during development, and was rebooted for the fourth time back in Summer 2022.
