Nate Purkeypile, a former lead artist with Bethesda who worked on the Fallout series, has said he feels The Elder Scrolls VI was announced so early due to the fact it had already been a while since Skyrim had come out, even though nearly eight years on and the game has still yet to see the light of day.
My assumption was always that we were announcing Starfield, and it had been so long already since Skyrim that we needed to make sure people were not just pissed at us. I would imagine that they will take a while to deliver it because there’s so much pressure behind that title.
He added that Bethesda is fine pushing a game back — using Starfield as an example — whereas this was “not really the case early on. On Skyrim, it was like, ‘It’s coming out on 11/11/11′ and we were like, what? Oh boy, no pressure!” The former Bethesda artist added that “there is less economic pressure to just get Elder Scrolls 6 out on a date, but there is more economic pressure to actually make sure it’s good.”
The Elder Scrolls VI was announced during E3 2018, although Bethesda hasn’t shown anything on the game since.
Bethesda’s Todd Howard spoke to Game Informer just before Christmas, where he said that development on the highly anticipated fantasy-RPG is “progressing really well,” noting that the “majority of the studio’s on VI.” Having said that, he made it clear Bethesda is in no rust get it out the door.
Right now there’s no indication that The Elder Scrolls VI will even arrive on the current generation of hardware, although at the very least it should come to a PlayStation console now that Microsoft is releasing many of its IPs on rival formats. Prior to this, it was largely assumed the game would be exclusive to Xbox and PC, seeing as how Microsoft owns ZeniMax Media.
