Insider NateTheHate has suggested that the Final Fantasy IX Remake may be in a spot of trouble or even cancelled, which comes in wake of Square Enix marking the 25th anniversary of the much-loved RPG.
Speaking on ResetEra, the leaker was asked if he’s heard anything about the long-rumoured project, garnering the following response:
As of last check it remains in development, to my knowledge; but I need to do a fresh check & see what a more current status is—as I did hear a month or so ago that it was in trouble & possibly cancelled.

Square Enix has never officially announced a Final Fantasy IX Remake, but rumours about the project have been doing the rounds for a while now. Earlier this year, NateTheHate claimed that the FFIX Remake was in development but not expected to arrive in 2025. Both Gematsu and journalist Jeff Grubb have claimed that a Final Fantasy IX Remake is in the pipeline.
Final Fantasy IX was originally released for the PSOne back in 2000 and was developed in parallel with Final Fantasy VIII. The game is noted for dropping the more futuristic tone of its predecessors in favour of a more medieval aesthetic that recalls the earlier Final Fantasy games.
