Speaking with EDGE magazine, The Lords of the Fallen Creative Director Cezar Virtosu has admitted that the upcoming action-RPG shares more similarities to Elden Ring than developer Hexworks had initially intended.
Virtosu said the team “braced for impact” after Elden Ring was first announced, and expressed its disappointment that its “breakthrough weapon,” the flail, was also seen in early promotional footage for FromSoftware’s epic fantasy-RPG. “That killed us inside,” he said.
That wasn’t the only blow to Hexworks. The team were equally surprised to see one of its boss creations was “nearly identical to Malena.” Despite this, Virtosu had nothing but positive things to say about Souls creator Hidetaka Miyazaki.
There is some pressure, as you can imagine. People have asked, ‘Do you guys have horse combat? Do you have an open world?’ Miyazaki is our daddy and our grandaddy. Without him, we wouldn’t have any jobs.
The Lords of the Fallen is currently in development for PS5, PC and Xbox Series X/S. The game has yet to attract a release date, but publisher CI Games said last year that the title will be released at some point in 2023.
