Todd Howard Says The Elder Scrolls VI Will Go Back To More Of A ‘Classic Bethesda Game’ Like Oblivion & Skyrim

Todd Howard has revealed during an interview on the Kinda Funny Games Podcast that The Elder Scrolls VI is going to be more of a ‘classic’ Bethesda title similar to The Elder Scrolls IV Oblivion and The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim.

As we come back to Elder Scrolls VI that we’re doing now, we’re coming back to that kind of classic style that we’ve missed, the we know really, really well. You’ve talked about tech and things like that, we’ve spent the last several years bringing Creation Engine 2, which powers Starfield, up to Creation Engine 3, which is gonna power Elder Scrolls VI and beyond.

Back in December last year, Howard revealed during an interview with Game Informer that development on The Elder Scrolls VI was progressing well, with the majority of the studio working on the project. Meanwhile, Kurt Kuhlmann, the co-lead designer on The Elder Scrolls V, revealed during a chat with PCGamer that the setting for The Elder Scrolls VI had already been decided while production was underway on Fallout 4.

As previously reported, Kuhlmann stated in the same interview that he was originally set to lead production on The Elder Scrolls VI, and that he had a vision for the project being the series’ Empire Strikes Back. Kuhlmann ended up departing Bethesda in 2023.

The Elder Scrolls VI was announced during E3 2018 but apart from a logo we’ve seen nothing on the project.
