Actor Walton Goggins has shed some light on the villain he’s set to play in the upcoming reboot of the Tomb Raider movie franchise.
New Tomb Raider movie details
Speaking during an interview with Yahoo Movies, Goggins teased that the as-yet unnamed baddie isn’t going to be what you expect, and is something of a complicated character. Details on the identity of the villain and his part in the story have yet to be announced.
"Is he a villain? Sure, that is an easy description,” said Goggins. "An antagonist, for sure. But [like other characters] I have been so lucky to have the opportunity to play over the course of my career, there are real reasons behind his antagonism, and it’s not what you’d expect. He is very complicated, and his motivations are pure."
Elsewhere, the actor heaped praise on co-star Alicia Vikander, who will be portraying Lara Croft in the 2018 action-adventure flick, as well as director Roar Uthaug. In fact, the whole reason he joined the project was the strength of the script.

"This director is an extraordinarily talented filmmaker, and Alicia Vikander I’ve met a few times, we have some friends in common, but I just think she’s one of the greatest contributions to any generation of actors, man," he said. “That for me was just a wonderful opportunity. But more importantly, the story is so good. It’s so good! I think I can say this: For me, it’s like Raiders of the Lost Ark meets a genre version of the Joseph Conrad novel Victory: An Island Tale. I just jumped at the chance."
The Tomb Raider movie is pencilled in for a release on March 16, 2018. The series has seen two previous film adaptations with Angelina Jolie taking on the role of Lara, namely 2001’s Lara Croft: Tomb Raider and 2003’s Lara Croft: Tomb Raider – The Cradle of Life. While both films were panned by critics, they proved to be commercially successfully, with the original in particular taking in $274.7 million worldwide
Tomb Raider celebrated its 20th anniversary this year, having launched on the Sega Saturn, PlayStation, and PC back in fall 1996.
