Alterra, the Animal Crossing-inspired title in development at Ubisoft, has reportedly been cancelled.
That’s according to a report on Insider Gaming, which states that staff were informed of the game’s cancellation on Tuesday before being sent home for the day. No layoffs were announced at the time, and staff working on the project were reportedly put on availability for other Ubisoft projects. It remains unclear what the game’s cancellation means for the support studios that were involved with the project.
Alterra was reportedly a social-simulator that took its cues from Animal Crossing, and included a voxel art style and gameplay mechanics that were similar to Minecraft, allowing players to use gathered materials to build anything they wanted. Insider Gaming notes that Alterra featured NPCs known as Matterlings, which looked like Funko Pop characters, with the game world featuring multiple biomes that were home to unique creatures and materials.
Ubisoft Montreal had been working on the project for nearly three years by the time of its cancellation, and was being helped by Patrick Redding and Fabien Lhéraud.
