The developer behind Uncharted 4: A Thief’s End has said it won’t push the PlayStation 4-exclusive sequel to 60fps if it negatively impacts the player’s experience with the game.
Speaking with EDGE, Naughty Dog’s Bruce Straley confirmed that the PlayStation Experience demo of Nathan Drake’s latest outing was locked at 30fps, though it actually ran a tad higher.
"We’re actually above 30, but we locked it [for the demo],” he said. "We’re going to do whatever it takes to make the game we want to make. If it means we could go for 60 but lose something that would really impact the player’s experience, then it’s our choice as developers to say, ‘Well, we’re going to go for the experience over the 60 frames.’"
According to EDGE, the PSX demo of the game, which saw Drake fighting his way through an island setting, was running at 37fps. Previous entries in the action-adventure franchise were clocked at 30fps.
Naughty Dog’s Arne Meyer previously commented that the studio would be targeting 1080p/60fps for “anything we’re doing this generation,” fuelling hope that Uncharted 4 would indeed be locked at 60fps.
Uncharted 4 is due out later this year. The game is said to offer a more open-world feel in comparison to its predecessors, and will also delve further into Drake’s character.
