Epic make ‘Unreal’ statement about the future, journalist on run after bad pun enrages readers and English teachers alike.
CEO and Overlord Tim Sweeney of Epic Games, the not-so-modestly named purveyors of Tournaments and Engines, has stated that the next iteration of their aforementioned Unreal Engine (version 4 for those keeping count), will ‘exclusively target the next console generation’.
This means that said Engine will be optimised for use with the next PlayStation (which we’re willing to hazard a guess will be called the PlayStation 4), Xbox, and Nintendo console, but according to Mr Sweeney, only ‘if Nintendo ships a machine with similar hardware specs’.
For a long time, the Unreal Engine has gone hand in hand with PCs, and is famous for getting superb graphics out of hardware of the day, but apparently Mr Sweeney feels that the Unreal 3 engine will be good enough to hold out until the Unreal 4 engine is eventual ported to the PC.
However, shunning their well established PC fan base might cause large repercussions for Epic, so it may not be the last we hear on the matter.
Stay tuned.
