Activision Publishing boss Eric Hirshberg has shed light on the industry giant’s decision to bring the Call of Duty back to its World War II roots with the next chapter in the multi-million selling first-person shooter franchise.
Speaking during an interview with Polygon, Hirsberg confirmed that the publishing behemoth had made plans over three years ago to move away from the futuristic setting with the upcoming Call of Duty WW2, although at the time had no idea it would be released at a time when war-themed videogames and films were both making something of a comeback.
“We’re all plugged into the same cultural rhythms to a certain extent. Specifically to us, three years ago when we greenlit this thing, we definitely just thought it was time to take the franchise back to its roots,” he said.

“Well I certainly can’t comment on any influences that might have an impact on our competitors, I can speak for us and you know I totally acknowledge that these things do seem to happen in waves like this. I mean three years ago when we dreamed up this game and decided it was time to go back to our roots, we could not have known at that time that the year we would launch it would be a year in which there would be several World War II movies in the theaters and that there would be other competitors going back to historical settings.”
Call of Duty WW2 is due out on PS4, PC, and Xbox One on November 3, 2017. The game will be fully unveiled today during a dedicated livestream event from London’s IMAX at 6.00pm BST, where we’ll surely get our first glimpse at the game in action. Recent leaks have confirmed that Call of Duty WW2 will feature a co-op campaign and private beta test, which you can access by preordering the game.
In addition, the upcoming World War II shooter will include a Season Pass and its DLC will be released under a 30-day exclusivity deal for PS4, as part of Sony’s ongoing partnership with Activision. If that wasn’t enough to whet your appetite for Sledgehammer Games’ upcoming title, Activision is also preparing a Call of Duty WW2 Pro Edition, which includes a heap of extra goodies including a steelbook case.
