Destiny 2 60fps on PS4 isn’t happening, here’s why

Bungie has explained that getting Destiny 2 running at 60fps on PlayStation 4 and Xbox One is possible, but would mean the studio would have to curb its ambitions for the sequel.

Speaking during an interview with EDGE magazine, the game’s executive producer, Mark Noseworthy, said that the former Halo developer doesn’t feel like it’s been restricted by its decisions in regards to capping the frame rate at 30fps for consoles.

Could we make a Destiny game that ran at 60 FPS? Yes," Noseworthy commented. "But the space would be smaller, it would be less cooperative, and there’d be fewer monsters to shoot. That’s not the game we want to make."

"We don’t feel we’ve been held back by the choices we’ve made about world simulation versus frame rate," he said. "In fact, we think we’re offering a player experience you can’t have elsewhere because of the choices we’re making."

Bungie has touched on the subject of the Destiny 2 frame rate before, telling IGN back in May that the PS4 Pro was not powerful enough to run the game at 60fps.

The console, the PS4 Pro is super powerful, but it couldn’t run our game at 60. Our game’s this rich physics simulation where collision of players, networking, etc, and like, it wouldn’t run… [there’s] not enough horsepower there,” said Bungie’s Luke Smith.

Destiny 2 is due for release on PlayStation 4 and Xbox One on September 6, 2017, with a PC version following on October 24. The game takes place following the events of Rise of Iron from the original Destiny, and sees Guardians on the defense after the Tower is brought to its knees by a prolonged attack from a Cabal unit known as The Red Legion.

As a result, all your gear and weapons will not be transferable to the sequel, although you can still carry over your Guardian’s gender and customised appearance.
