Back in the day, if you wanted to play a casino game, you would have had to go to a land-based casino. Which are usually only found in city centres here in the UK, so they would either require a hefty commute to get there or you simply wouldn’t go at all. And then, as we started to gain access to the internet, some of the early bloomers of the online casino industry went digital, meaning that we would then need to be on a laptop or a desktop in order to play our favourite casino games. Although compared to the present day, this still presented a level of inconvenience, as internet speeds weren’t great and the quality of the games wasn’t as engaging. If you remember the days of ADSL and dial-up, they weren’t great.
Smartphones rule the roost.
Although in almost every country where gambling is legal, the most popular medium through which people access online casinos now is through smartphones or tablets. Smartphones allow us to do almost anything. From creating invoices to being able to play online slots to video calling with multiple work colleagues, The reason it’s so popular is that it makes these casinos so much more accessible. It doesn’t require you to travel down to the casino or be at a physical computer. Meaning people can play their favourite online games wherever there may be. And since they’ve landed on smartphones, they haven’t yet progressed to any other forms of technology.
Why not move to consoles?
However, with smartphones, tablets, and laptops aside, one medium that online casinos have yet to venture into is gaming consoles. The sales of gaming consoles account for tens of billions of pounds each and every year. Almost every household, on average, will have at least one, if not more than one, console. And so, is there a reason for this? If there is such a demand for people wanting to play online casino games, why not make it accessible on every single digital device that you can? Well, firstly, both on the major PlayStation and Xbox platforms, this requires their software development teams to develop an app for a totally different ecosystem.
A commercial dilemma
Of course, this requires not only resources but also investment from both the software development companies that create the games and the casinos. But when they are seeing such popularity in people playing through their mobiles, it then presents a rather difficult business decision as to say there shouldn’t be any need to expand as they already have the most popular medium by far, which is smartphones accessible to their online audience. And this is most likely the reason, although we don’t know for sure why we have yet to see online casinos venture into consoles. There is, however, the opportunity in the future for virtual reality to enter the frame, which, of course, is most closely associated with game consoles.
In Summary
Hopefully, if you’ve always wondered why online casinos haven’t ventured into the realm of consoles, this has shed a bit of light on it today. For now and the foreseeable future, smartphones look very safe in keeping their top spot as the most popular and easier way for people to play their favourite online casino games. However, as we all know, technology is advancing at a spectacular rate lately, so it remains to be seen if this could change, and we could then see consoles as the most dominant medium.
