Your PS5 Save Data Can’t Be Backed Up On An External Device

Sony’s upcoming PS5 does not support the option of moving your save data for the console to an external device such as a USB drive. Instead, your only current option is to use the cloud storage via PlayStation Plus, meaning you have to pay for the privilege.

No External Device For PS5 Save Data

This is obviously different to how things worked on the PS4, which allowed users to back up their save files on external devices in addition to PS Plus cloud storage. If you want to transfer your PS5 save data to another system or just back it up for safety, then subscribing to PS Plus is currently your only option.

If you head to the PS5 system settings and go to Saved Data and Game/App Setting, you’ll see Saved Data (PS4). Here, you can select the option of copying PS4 save files to a USB drive or cloud storage, or delete them outright. For PS5 however, the only option available is Cloud Storage, with the USB Drive setting nowhere to be found.

Sadly, the PS5 also does not currently allow you to move games onto an external device either, which combined with the issue above, isn’t exactly great news. Hopefully this will change down the line.

The PS5 is out on November 12 and November 19 in the US and UK, respectively.
