Zach Cregger, the director of the next Resident Evil movie, has revealed during an appearance at Sony Pictures’ CinemaCon event yesterday that the horror reboot will be unlike any previous films in the franchise.
The Resident Evil movie franchise kicked off in 2002 with Paul W.S. Anderson’s self-titled effort, which starred Milla Jovovich and zombie-killing amnesiac Alice. The film’s success spawned a franchise that went on to gross over one billion dollars at the box office, and was followed by 2021’s Resident Evil: Welcome To Raccoon City, a reboot that combined the stories of Resident Evil and Resident Evil 2.

Cregger explained that his adaptation will channel the spirit of the classic games and follows a single protagonist travelling from A to B.
There’s a moment that comes in almost every Resident Evil game where you find yourself in a dark passageway, your health is almost zero and there’s no way around. You have to go through but you know there’s something awful for you in the darkness. That is a thrill that the Resident Evil games have perfected. My movie will be built in the spirit of those games and follows one central protagonist from point A to point B, as they descend deeper into hell.
Previous rumours about the new Resident Evil movie suggested it would be an adaptation of Resident Evil Zero, which followed S.T.A.R.S. Bravo Team medic, Rebecca Chambers, and escaped convict Billy Coen. However, Cregger’s description seems to imply the movie will be an original story.
Speaking of Resident Evil Zero however, it has been heavily rumoured that Capcom is working on a full remake of the 2002 GameCube prequel. The franchise marks its 30th anniversary in March 2026, so we should hopefully get some major announcements at some point this year as Capcom gears up to celebrate the milestone.
