I Am Your Beast PS5 Review. The developers behind the excellent El Paso, Elsewhere, Strange Scaffold, have returned with another stylish, gritty first-person shooter. I Am Your Beast delivers fast-paced action wrapped in a punchy, no-nonsense presentation that mostly hits its target.
I Am Your Beast Review (PS5) – Unleash the Beast
I Am Your Beast is a punishing, adrenaline-fuelled ride that knows exactly what it wants to be, even if a few rough edges hold it back from greatness. Still, it’s another confident step forward for one of the most exciting indie teams working today.
Players step into the role of Alphonse Harding, a grizzled veteran called back by his former military commander for one final mission. When Harding stubbornly refuses, he sparks a series of tightly packed, sandbox-style shootouts, forcing him to shift from prey to predator as he battles a relentless guerrilla force.
Traditional cutscenes are absent; instead, the frantic firefights are punctuated by concise radio conversations, delivered as large blocks of on-screen text that set the tone and move the action forward. The story is thin but fits the tone of the game nicely enough.
Light em’ Up
Much like the fantastic Superhot, or the clinical Ghostrunner, I Am Your Beast thrives on momentum and split-second decision-making. It shares that same satisfying loop of clearing rooms with precision and speed, but trades puzzle-like structure for raw, chaotic gunfights.
While it’s less polished than its peers, the scrappy, aggressive pacing gives it a distinct, feral edge. It’s a game that feels more about instinct than perfection. It’s designed precisely with replayability in mind.
Everything is crafted in a way that entices you to keep playing again and again to improve your score. Whether it’s the sometimes brutal challenges or striking you with that itch to get a better rank in the campaign, I Am Your Beast knows how to keep you hooked.
Death From Above
Each mission has two hidden challenges, which, again, encourage replaying to complete them. The key to the high ranks is to complete both hidden challenges and finish the mission swiftly once you unlock them both.
I’m quite a fan of the idea that missions require higher ranks on previous missions to progress. It insists on you honing your skills before moving on to the harder missions. I felt it ensured, for the most part, that I was never thrown in the deep end. If I was good enough to hit the required rank, I usually found myself fairly competently blasting through the next mission.
When the game makes you get those set ranks for progression and you hone your skills, you can pull off some fantastic feats. The tight controls and aiming really work in your favour here.
Heads Up!
That’s not to say any of the missions are easy to S rank. It’s brutally difficult. You must achieve everything required of you as quickly as all hell. It is, however, more forgiving if you simply want to aim for the base ranks it requires to progress. Something I’d highly recommend doing before hunkering down for the high rank playthroughs.
As you push through the campaign, the game steadily drip-feeds you more traps, tools, and weapons to play with. Each new addition opens up fresh ways to chain kills and pull off even wilder combinations. The more you unlock, the more creative and chaotic your runs can get. It’s a pretty brilliant feeling when it all clicks together mid-fight.
Whether it’s chaining together clean headshots, throwing a knife at someone rushing you, hurling your gun to finish off someone when you’re out of ammo, leaping off a tree branch and shooting an explosive barrel to take out multiple soldiers, and then elbow dropping another; the game allows you to chain those combinations in any way you wish for maximum fun and carnage.
This May Sting A Little
If and when you finish with the campaign, don’t worry. Get ready for the brutal extra modes that seriously up the difficulty. These challenges strip away any breathing room and demand absolute precision.
They’re proper tests of everything you’ve learned, and perfect for players who want to push their skills to the edge. It’s the kind of content that dares you to get better, and it’s all the more satisfying if you can pull it off.
And if you’re a total masochist, you can gun for the Queen Sweep and S rank all content, which is no small feat. As of writing, no one on PS5 has accomplished it. Even if ranks weren’t enough to keep you going, this is still an explosive 3-4 hours of increasingly punishing missions to blast through.
Bonk!
I Am Your Beast is a sharp, scrappy shooter that keeps you locked in with its fierce pacing and rewarding combat. Its brutal challenges and replay-focused design push you to keep improving. There’s a real thrill in steadily mastering its demanding missions.
It might lack the polish of its peers, but its raw, no-nonsense style gives it a distinct edge. Strange Scaffold has delivered another confident, memorable shooter that’s hard to put down and easy to recommend for anyone craving fast, skill-driven action.
