Sony Computer Entertainment Australia has confirmed that the 80GB PlayStation 3 console will be released in the territory on August 28, priced at approximately AUD 699.

As with other regions, the new SKU will replace the existing 40GB model, and comes complete with a single DualShock 3 control pad.

SCE Australia’s Managing Director, Michael Ephraim, commented, "Having achieved an install base of over 350,000 consoles to date, the PS3 has already found its place in many Australian homes.”

"With more compelling content being made available to PS3 owners every week through the PlayStation Network, the extra storage offered in this new model will prove invaluable.

"In addition, the 80GB memory allows you consolidate all of your digital music, photos and movies in one central place within the home and experience them on a high definition TV. Add to this the ability to enjoy Blu-ray movies and games and it's clear why the PS3 has earned its place as the leading entertainment hub in today's home,” added Ephraim.

The 80GB machine will also be hitting Europe on August 27, with a 80GB “Core Pack” scheduled for release in North America next month.

Can I just confirm... this 80gb model differs only in the size of the HDD? Or is this one of the models that also supports PS2 games / has more USB ports / etc?

In Denmark the 80 GB model will cost $160 more than the 40 GB Model. Didn't Sony say they would cost the same? I'm frikkin' pissed.

This is the non Backward compatibility support PS3, so no PS2/PS1 games for it.

To Shinobi (Post 5):  The current 40GB and to be released 80GB actually does have PS1 backwards compatibility, it's PS2 games that are not supported because they got rid of the emotion chip and do no use software emulation, but the software emulation for PS1 games is still present and thus it's still plays those games.
