All MMOs will be console-based, says Sony Online

In the second part of an already revelations-heavy interview with MTV, Sony Online Entertainment boss John Smedley has revealed that all SOE's upcoming MMOs will appear on consoles.

He didn't actually say this, to be fair - he just said "yes" when MTV popped the question. But that's good enough for us.

According to Smedley, the MMO genre as a whole is slowly drifting further into console space. "Studies show that a lot of people who have consoles also have PCs," he told MTV. "However, they also show that most of the people that have a console play their console as their primary gaming device."

"I think what’s going to happen is you’re going to see a whole new generation of players that have been playing “Resistance” now start getting introduced to MMOs," Smedley went on. "I think it’s going to be a cool way for them to experience games that have been on the PC for a while, but have a totally different kind of gameplay on the console."

Sony is in a good position to exploit this trend, he said, as one of only two console MMO publishers on the market (the other's Square Enix). Smedley also mentioned that SOE faces reduced technical challenges in transferring its PC MMOs to console, having put together an engine which works across both platforms.

"There was some up front investment, certainly, but we’ve invested in making sure that the technology runs on both," he said. "We’re adapting controls and some of the communication features but we’re trying to keep the same primary game."

consoles are abit safer to play on i think then PCs. they dont have as big a risk if any of getting hacked.

i think the idea of having the console running mmorpg games is brilliant, theres many great games, that can be run on the ps3 like, Everquest 2 World of warcraft,Ragnarok 2, and Final Fantasy 11

i think if sony gets all these games running on the ps3 that would be great :P

I prefer when MMO's are less menu driven and feel more like a massive action game. Phantasy Star Online was the best example of that and I wish something would recreate that awe that I felt at the beauty and gameplay of that title. Phantasy Star Universe didn't feel as good.

"Studies show that a lot of people who have consoles also have PCs,"

YES, so please make sure you add the OPTION to use mouse & keyboard on all games converted from PC to console. This stops me buying the console version as in some games i prefer to use mouse and keyboard.

Yeah I hope mouse+keyboard get added as options on these upcoming games as well for the PS3 I would certainly reconsider going primarily PS3. The piracy on PC is outta control as well , using tha hypervisor to advantage would be a good idea.

Wha? You guys are just... I have no words for it. ANY MMO account can get hacked, it doesn't to be pc. As for the piracy? What does that have to do MMOs? You STILL have to pay a monthly fee to play.

Personally, as long as they keep making the MMOs for PC, that's MY preferred platform for them.

So what about the sixty thousand dollar question? How much are we gonna hafta pay a month for each of these gems? Just cuz PSN is free doesn't mean the companies are willing to run thier servers for MMOs for free.

this is the last nail in  pc gamings coffin, now that consoles are way more relevant, more cost effective, easy to use, and more secure for both devs and and gamers, not only that now that theres integrated online service, things like mods and other features that were previously pc only are now possible on consoles BRING ON THE MMOs!!!

and rivel that person  you are calling stupid is the boss of SOE (1of2 MMO publishers, according to the article) i think he's qualified to say where THEIR games are going you would know this if you actually read the artcil, THINK BEFORE YOU POST
