Anime on your Blu-ray

Posted on July 26th, 2007 at 13:51 EDT

FUNimation, purveyors of dubbed Anime, have announced that they will be bringing some of their wares to Blu-ray.

To be announced at this years San Diego Comic Con, FUNimation plan to bring two Dragon Ball Z films to the High definition format, namely the 8th movie, Broly: Legend of the Super Saiyan, and the 10th movie, Broly: Second Coming.

The films have been digitally remastered from the original Japanese reel, complete with 5.1 surrond sound, and all in high definition. After this, FUNimation plans to bring some of it's other 'popular' Anime properties to Blu-ray, our guess being shows like Fullmetal Alchemist, Lupin III and other Dragon Ball related stuff.

This move continues to highlight how Blu-ray is becoming the next gen media of choice.

Stay tuned.

Awesome! I really need to save up for a PS3 so I can watch more blu-ray movies. I wouldn't mind watching DBZ all over again.

Fullmetal Alchemist is a wickedly awesome anime. But for the love of mirp, why would anyone dub anime, it's just so... so wrong...

I'm not crazy about FUNimation. If the new Helsing Ultimate or GitS:SAC came to Blu-Ray, then I'd dance in the streets.

anime doesnt need to be in high def. it will look good no matter what tv you are on. only reason you could want anime on br is to get the entire season or series on one disc.

DBZ kicked A.S.S. Lupin the 3rd was pretty funny at the time. But I'm not a kid anymore, so I dont watch either. Good memories though. @Fnords Only true, nerdy, hardcore anime fans, cared about DBZ being dubbed, I thought it did an awesome job.

THat's nice, but will we get the entire series on 1 blu-ray. Or will they try to suck us dry for our money, by breaking it up into 4 episodes per disc?

Is that so (= Well then I'm a hardcore nerdy anime fan! Just feels wrong with English instead of Japanese in anime, the characters don't come to life in the same way when you dub a anime/movies. Just keep it as the artists intended, that way you're experiencing it the way it was supposed to, and it's only showing proper respect for the artists work.

Series as Weeds is getting releases as 1 season per disc (think season 2 had two disks, with one of them having lots of extra content), so we can only hope (=

Incredible that anime is finally coming to Blu-Ray, been waiting on this for a while now. Fnords: you're foolish to think that the creator's art has anything to do with the original voice track for the anime. The creator of the anime did not select the voice actors and actresses, nor did they get a say in how the characters voices were made to act. Dubbing the anime carries the same process, they find the most talented voice actors, or at least the ones they feel are best for the part, and get them to overlay onto the animation. I prefer Sub or Dub depending on the anime, with DBZ I enjoyed the original cast far more than the redub by the second. I happen to be a total anime freak fan myself and don't appreciate that kind of misuse of saying something was "meant to be a certain way" when it wasn't.
