“Downloading game settings”
If that phrase means anything to you, than you must be one of the irritated Call of Duty 4 owners on the PlayStation 3. If it doesn't, that's the message that Call of Duty 4 has been spewing out whenever we've endeavoured to experience the engrossing shooter online.
It's certainly no good, but the end of the world isn't drawing any nearer. Infinity Ward is working day and night (literally through the night) to fix the game's online mode.
"The server team has been working on this all weekend, and will be working through the night" to fix the online functionality of the game.
The issue that players are having are indeed with the servers, so you won't even have to download a pesky patch - the issue should soon just disappear.
"The only real issue is that the servers we're getting hit really hard, especially with the launch in Europe doubling that traffic, just something that requires optimising on the server side and we've been working with the PSN COD4 Server team from the moment it started having issues assisting any way we can to help them get them up to speed faster."
In a statement issued today, Infinity Ward announced they're "upgrading all server hardware as well as dedicated an individual database to each functionality to improve performance and handle the traffic hitting the servers."
When this will translate to a flaw-free online experience we aren't sure, but it should hopefully start working soon. If you're still getting the 'Downloading Game Settings' message during the upgrade, just wait it out, and it should eventually place you into a lobby.
"Remember, this is just short term, eventually once everything is upgraded you won't be receiving Downloading Game Settings at all."
We'll be waiting for you online. We'll have more for you on Call of Duty 4 soon.

Thank the Lord!
Thank God!
I was sick of seeing that stupid "Downloading Game Settings!" and the stupid 5 minute waits to get into a fuC.King game that turns out to be sH.I.T!
Finally, I'm glad they won't leave it a broken system how EA tends to do.
i hope that by the time i buy the game tmw that the online will be up working better then ever. and its really good to hear that infinity ward is working on it which show that they are and have been putting alot effort into making this a really good game!!!!!!!!
about TIME!!
Well it's damn good to hear they're at least addressing the problems, not that they wouldn't.....but dayum, it's a new game with such a dope multiplayer-ya hate to see problems arise.
psn id: gingo.... its good how quickly these developers get to fixing these problems because online is absolutly immense but its been frustrating trying to get a game
As much as I'm thankful for the issue almost being fixed, nothing is going to fix the long weekend I had mostly wasted with irritation.
Shouldn't they have been anticipating this kinda server hit anyway.
my guess is they werent ready for so much demand for the ps3 version.
the message is only there for about 20 seconds, just press O after a small while and its gone...no biggie
Yeah I had this message a few times, but eventually I get in after a few tries. Its only to be expected as soon as a new online game gets released, they'll always be a few bugs to iron out of the system. The same happened with Warhawk and the same happened with Resitance when it had a major update some time back now.
man i have to still wait for the downloading settings for like 15 or 20 minutes thank god there fixing that !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! psn id: soul_reaper25
get 2 it please sick of the Downloading Game Settings........ The game is 9/10
Thank GOD, I don't know how many times i was in a great game of Ground War Domination on Backlot or like Strike and then we got Connection interrupted.
That's good but now they need to address the fact you can't message your friends in game or join them and the fact there is no clan support.
I guess they again under estimated the amount of ps3 owners using those servers eh?
Sounds like an amazing fix. They fixed replaced the "Downloading Game Settings" annoyance with connection crashes. Awesome, it's just what I wanted.
Its a great game and Im taking no chances with this one - PC only.
Its becoming a pretty normal excuse now for these developers to say they weren't ready for the major hit online or the number of users, and then everyone praises them for acting quickly to work on it. Honestly they should have been ready in the first place - not just CoD4 but all online games. Especially CoD4, Warhawk etc that were hyped and expected a large user base. This is BS and I think honestly companies are releasing half assed products as a fail safe in case they don't do well, they save money. If lotta people use em then they put in major overtime to get the product up to specs. Ok after a breather that might not be the case.. but the problem is we are still aren't getting a "final" product on these releases which is crap.
When I started reading the post i thought that something was wrong with the ps3, onlyy to realise that it is the server from the developper's end that has a problem. The ps3 remains one h*ll of a machine and hopefully developpers will start dedicating more n more time time to it.
